Making Herbs Accesible

Can you really buy herbs with EBT?

It depends. When considering the eligibility of herbs, minerals, or supplements, the primary determinant for Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) eligibility is the type of product or food label chosen by the manufacturer to conform to Food and Drug Administration (FDA) guidelines. If an item has a "Nutrition Facts" label, it is considered a food item by the FDA, and is eligible for SNAP purchase. Medicinal products (usually including vitamins, minerals, and supplements) are nonfood items with "Supplement Facts" labels and are, therefore, not eligible for purchase with SNAP benefits. learn more about the difference at one of our Health is Wealth workshops! sign up today at 8572441104.

real lavender field high shot pic.jpg

Lavender's got a fancy real name - Lavandula - but let's just stick to calling it lavender, shall we? This plant is a piece of cake to grow and maintain, even for those of us with a less-than-green thumb. Just give it plenty of sunshine and soil that drains well, and don't go over with the watering - lavender likes it dry.

Not only does lavender smell amazing, but it's also got some pretty sweet benefits. It's like spa day in a plant! Lavender can help you chill out and de-stress, and it's great for soothing skin issues and getting some quality shut-eye.

And let's not forget about cooking with lavender - it's not just for fancy-pants chefs. You can add a touch of lavender to all sorts of dishes, from sweet treats like lavender-infused ice cream to savory dishes like grilled veggies. Just don't go too crazy with it, or you might end up with a dish that tastes like a field of flowers.

peppermint fieldhigh shot pic..jpg

Peppermint, aka the "cool kid" of the herb world, is a refreshing and zesty herb that's perfect for adding some pizzazz to your life. It's like a breath mint, but for your whole body! Growing peppermint is a breeze - just give it some water, some sun, and a little TLC, and it'll be thriving in no time. And the best part? Peppermint is like a superhero in herb form - it can soothe your tummy troubles, zap your headaches, and freshen your breath all at once. So go ahead, add some pep to your step with peppermint!

dandelion fresh and puff ball.jpg

Growing dandelions is as easy as pie, or should I say, as easy as scattering seeds and watering them regularly. Just make sure to give them plenty of sunshine and they'll be as happy as a clam!

Now, let's talk about eating these bad boys. You can eat leaves raw in salads or cook them up like spinach. And don't even get me started on the flowers - they're perfect for making tea, wine, or even fritters. And if you're feeling adventurous, you can roast the roots and use them as a coffee substitute. Who needs Starbucks when you have dandelions?

But wait, there's more! Dandelions are packed with nutrients and have tons of health benefits. They're like a superhero in flower form. They have anti-inflammatory properties, can help with digestion, and even improve liver function. So next time you see a dandelion, don't be afraid to chow down and reap the benefits!

thyme plants.jpg

Thyme, thyme, thyme... where do we even begin with this little herb? Well, for starters, it's like the Beyoncé of the herb world - versatile, fragrant, and always in demand. It's been around for thousands of years, you know it's got some serious street cred. And let's forget about its medicinal - it's like a-stop-shop for all your health needs. Got a respiratory infection? Thyme's got you covered. Digestive issues? Thyme's got your back. Skin problems? Thyme's got... well, you get the idea.

But the best part about thyme? It's so easy to grow, even your grandma could do it (no offense, grandma). Just give it some well-drained soil, full sun, and a little TLC, and you'll have more thyme than you know what to do with. So go ahead, add some thyme to your favorite dishes, and let this little herb work its magic. Who knows, maybe it'll even make you feel like a superstar (or at least a slightly healthier version of yourself).
